What Makes Catan Special?

Catan is a game that debuted in 1995 and remains one of the most popular titles in the world, and Singapore is no exception. At the PI-Games shop on Orchard Road it is consistently one of the five best-selling titles. Why? Because it combines simple mechanics with genuine strategic depth.

Every game looks different due to the random board layout at the start. Players collect resources – wood, brick, grain, ore and wool – and then trade them with other players or the bank, building roads, settlements and cities. The key to success is not only good resource management but also table diplomacy.

How Does the Game Perform in Singapore?

In Singapore board game cafés such as Mind Café, Catan is available almost always. The PlayNow Tabletop Games Club community regularly organises sessions with this title. The Asian version with English text is easily available at every major board game shop in the city.

Who Is It For?

Catan works well for both families with children over 10 and groups of friends looking for a game that encourages conversation. It is not a title for players who value mechanics above all else – here it is about interaction, negotiation and a touch of luck with the dice.

Pros

  • Simple mechanics, quick to learn (15 min)
  • Dynamic negotiations between players
  • Every game looks different
  • Rich ecosystem of expansions

Cons

  • Possible downtime with 4 players
  • The random element can be frustrating
  • With 2 players the game loses dynamics

Verdict: Catan is an essential title in every board gamer's collection in Singapore. Available at NTUC FairPrice, PI-Games and TeamBoardGame for 69–80 SGD.

Pandemic – cooperative game board

Pandemic – Together Against the Epidemic

Players: 1–4
Time: 45–60 minutes
Age: 8+
Price in SG: ~55–70 SGD
Publisher: Z-Man Games
Rating 8.7 /10

Mechanics That Unite Players

Pandemic is a cooperative game in which all players play together against the board. Each participant takes on a specialist with unique abilities – the Medic moves faster and cures diseases, the Scientist discovers cures with fewer cards, and the Researcher easily shares cards with others. The group's goal is to develop cures for four diseases before epidemics spiral out of control.

The game mechanics force communication – without shared decisions and task division, victory is virtually impossible. This makes Pandemic an ideal title for team building and family evenings.

Pandemic in the Singapore Context

The game particularly gained popularity in Singapore after the COVID-19 pandemic experience – players appreciate the metaphorical dimension of the gameplay. TOYTAG regularly organises game demonstrations for new players. The Legacy version (seasonal, with permanent board changes) is one of the most discussed titles on the Singaporean Reddit forum r/boardgames_sg.

Differences Between Versions

The base version of Pandemic is a good starting point, but for experienced players we recommend Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 – a narrative campaign where decisions from one session have permanent consequences in subsequent games.

Pros

  • Full cooperation builds a sense of teamwork
  • Diverse roles give everyone a unique task
  • Solo mode – great for solitary evenings
  • Good difficulty scaling

Cons

  • Risk of "quarterbacking" (one player decides for everyone)
  • With 2 players it lacks dynamics

Verdict: Pandemic is the best entry into the world of cooperative games. Available at TOYTAG and PI-Games. For advanced players we recommend the Legacy version.

Ticket to Ride: Asia – Railway Across the Continent

Players: 2–5
Time: 45–90 minutes
Age: 8+
Price in SG: ~65–85 SGD
Publisher: Days of Wonder
Rating 8.4 /10

An Asian Route for Singaporeans

Ticket to Ride: Asia is a map that players from Singapore connect with particularly strongly. Routes run through Southeast Asia, China, India and Japan. Players collect colourful train cards and then claim railway routes on the map, trying to complete hidden ticket cards connecting distant cities.

The mechanics are elegant: every move is a decision between drawing cards and claiming routes. Tension rises when another player blocks your planned path. The Asian edition adds an optional team mode, expanding gameplay possibilities.

Why Choose the Asian Edition?

For players from Singapore the Asian edition has extra regional appeal. Routes through Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia bring a smile of recognition. TOYTAG in Woods Square runs regular demonstrations of this version and recommends it as one of the best gifts for families.

Pros

  • Intuitive mechanics – ideal for new players
  • Regional flavour close to Asian players
  • Team mode for 4–6 people
  • Shorter gameplay than the European edition

Cons

  • With 2 players the map feels empty
  • The randomness of card draws can frustrate

Verdict: An ideal game for families and new players. Buy Ticket to Ride: Asia at TOYTAG for approx. 75 SGD. Worth it.
